Dr. Ivan Puente has been the Medical Director for Trauma Services at two Level I facilities in south Florida–Delray Medical Center since 1994 and Broward Health Medical Center since 1995–with more than 30 years of experience in treating trauma patients altogether.
Dr. Puente graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Honors Program at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of California–San Francisco School of Medicine. He completed his General and Vascular Surgery Residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in 1992. Following residency, he completed fellowships in Surgical Critical Care (1993) and Trauma Surgery (1994) at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Puente holds dual faculty appointments as Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Wertheim College of Medicine of Florida International University and Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine of Florida Atlantic University. He serves as Site Director for the Larkin General Surgery Residency program at Delray Medical Center and the Mount Sinai General Surgery Residency program at Broward Health Medical Center.
He has been actively involved in surgical research throughout his career and has authored and co-authored a large number of publications, as well as completed multiple funded projects in the field of trauma care. Recognized as a regional and national leader in Trauma Quality Improvement, Dr. Puente serves on multiple process improvement committees, including as Chair of the Broward County Trauma Quality Improvement Committee.
In addition to Trauma and Critical Care, Dr. Puente’s other areas of interest include Endocrine, Hernia, and Minimally Invasive Surgery.
